Claims for stomach-related issues – such as food poisoning and gastroenteritis – have increased in recent years and can be costly, according to an insurance company.
Aviva data from 2025 shows that UK claims peak between July and September, reflecting the higher number of people going abroad on summer holidays. Figures show that treatment for stomach-related issues costs almost £4,100 ($5,500) on average.
Despite Spain having the highest number of such claims overall, the United States is the most expensive country to seek treatment, where medical costs for stomach bugs can reach nearly £11,900 ($16,000) on average. Average costs put Spain in second at £4,644 ($6,200), followed by Greece, Canada and Cyprus.
