The Italian Consul in Detroit, Allegra Baistrocchi, in her role as President of the European Union (EU) in Michigan, presided today over the celebration of Europe Day at the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall, members of the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps present in the state attended the event, along with representatives from non-profit organizations and other distinguished guests.
In her speech, Consul Baistrocchi highlighted the importance of the EU’s founding in promoting cooperation among European countries, evolving from a declaration of intent into a union of 27 nations, more than 450 million citizens, and a lasting commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
Baistrocchi also took the opportunity to emphasize the strong and enduring ties between Europe and Michigan, where over 3 million people can trace their origins to a European country such as Italy, Ireland, Greece, Poland, or Germany. She noted that the relationship between the EU and the State of Michigan extends beyond these historical connections, stating, “Michigan is one of Europe’s most valued economic partners in the United States.”
To further illustrate this strong economic partnership, Baistrocchi pointed out that “there are over $121.1 billion in EU foreign direct investments in the state and around $11 billion in exports of goods and services from Michigan to the EU in 2023.”
The relationship between Michigan and the EU goes well beyond financial and economic ties, with collaboration involving cultural and civic institutions, universities, and schools to promote educational exchanges, celebrate the arts, and foster global citizenship. Governor Whitmer, whose leadership emphasizes international engagement and cooperation, stated that the partnership between her state and Europe is more important than ever—from seeking solutions for clean energy and climate change to advancing peace, equity, and human rights.
She continued: “All these partnerships create a deeper exchange of ideas, experiences, and traditions and ultimately help make Michigan a better place to live, work, and invest,” before thanking Consul Baistrocchi for her dedication to the State of Michigan and presenting her with a proclamation officially recognizing today as “Europe Day” in Michigan.
