Mortadella Bologna PGI closed the first half of 2025 on a strong note, with both production and sales rising year-on-year. Production rose to 19.8 million kilograms, up 3.2% from the 19.2 million recorded in the first six months of 2024. Sales volumes climbed by 3.4%, reaching 16.19 million kilograms.
The pre-sliced segment continued its upward trajectory, expanding by 4.3% and reinforcing a decade-long growth trend.
Export markets proved especially dynamic, with sales increasing by 8.4% compared to the same period last year. Belgium led the gains with a sharp 64.3% jump, followed by Switzerland (+34.4%), Spain (+19.3%), and the UK (+17%). Overall, exports now account for 24.3% of total sales, up from 22% in the first half of 2024.
“We are extremely pleased with the results achieved in the first half of the year,” said Guido Veroni, president of the Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna PGI. “We’re particularly encouraged by the strong export performance in markets such as Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, and the UK—countries where we’ve invested in EU-co-funded promotional campaigns. These include in-store tastings, large-scale retail promotions, engagement with the Horeca channel, as well as outreach to journalists, influencers, and culinary schools.” Veroni added that the strategy is paying off: “We’re seeing clear signs that once European consumers have the chance to try Mortadella Bologna PGI, they come to value it enough to make it part of their regular food purchases.”
The Consortium views international markets as a key driver of future growth, with the expanding export share viewed as a validation of its long-term strategy.
