Tomorrow at noon local time (6:00 PM in Italy), the Parmigiano Reggiano PDO cheese will take center stage in over 450 Loblaw Companies Ltd. supermarkets across Canada, as part of an ambitious event to officially set a new Guinness World Record. More than 1,800 wheels of Italy’s “King of Cheeses” will be opened simultaneously from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts, surpassing the existing record of over 1,000 wheels established in 2014.
This initiative coincides with Italian Heritage Month celebrations in Canada, promoting the rich cultural, historical, and gastronomic values embodied by Parmigiano Reggiano PDO. Canada ranks as the fifth-largest international market for this iconic cheese, with significant growth potential; in 2024, exports exceeded 3,500 tons, marking a 24.5% increase from the previous year.
The Canadian event will engage hundreds of operators, chefs, enthusiasts, and consumers, offering tasting sessions and opportunities for discovery that underscore the cultural and culinary significance of Parmigiano Reggiano. The main festivities will take place at the Loblaws Maple Leaf Gardens store in downtown Toronto, where 20 wheels will be opened in the presence of representatives from the Parmigiano Reggiano Protection Consortium, Loblaw Companies Ltd., and Canadian chef and television personality David Rocco. Visitors at all participating supermarkets will have the chance to witness the opening of the wheels, sample the cheese, and partake in experiential activities and photo opportunities.
Nicola Bertinelli, President of the Consortium, remarked: “The demand for Parmigiano Reggiano PDO in Canada is steadily increasing among discerning consumers who value quality, authenticity, and tradition. With this event, held during Italian Heritage Month, we aim to celebrate not just a piece of cheese, but an emblem of the Italian lifestyle, cherished by consumers worldwide.”
