Italy Reaffirms Its Position as World Pasta Champion

In 2024, 58% of Italy’s pasta production was exported, amounting to more than 2.42 million tonnes, a 9.1% increase from the previous year, according to data from Unione Italiana Food, based on Istat figures. The total value of these exports reached €4.02 billion, marking a 4.8% year-on-year rise. In practical terms, this equates to around 80 million servings of Italian pasta being consumed globally in nearly 200 countries.

Of the pasta exported by Italy, 1.5 million tonnes were sent to EU markets, while 898,815 tonnes were distributed to non-EU countries. Exports to the EU accounted for 62.9% of total pasta exports, a slight decrease from 64.8% in 2023, while the remaining 37.1% went to non-EU markets spanning America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Germany (467,183 tonnes), the United States (302,177 tonnes), the United Kingdom (283,478 tonnes), France (278,511 tonnes), and Japan (69,589 tonnes) were the top importers.

The appetite for Italian pasta continues to surge, with demand growing by between 5% and 20% in markets such as Sweden, Canada, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China, and several Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries. In some regions, growth exceeded 50%, with notable increases in Mexico, Argentina, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka.

Today, nearly 60% of Italian pasta produced is exported,” said Margherita Mastromauro, President of the Italian Pasta Makers Association within Unione Italiana Food. “The global success of Italian pasta and its highly favorable reputation abroad is a testament to the centuries-old expertise of Italian pasta makers. This growth underscores how Italian pasta meets the evolving tastes of consumers worldwide, balancing tradition with innovation.”
