Italy Leads Europe’s Gelato Market

Italy continues to drive gelato consumption in Europe, representing—together with France and Spain—68% of all portions sold across the continent’s top five markets, according to data released ahead of SIGEP World – The World Expo for Foodservice Excellence, taking place in Rimini from 16 to 20 January 2026.

Despite weather-related uncertainties, the summer season confirmed steady growth for the Italian gelato sector, which generated an estimated €3 billion in annual turnover, 70% of which is concentrated in the warmer months. According to the Italian Gelatieri Association (AIG), sales rose 3% compared to 2024, with central Italy (+5%) and the south (+4%) outperforming the north, where heavy rains limited consumer demand.

Despite some unfavorable weather conditions, summer has boosted gelato consumption in Italy, France, and Spain, which together account for 68% of portions served across the five leading European countries,” said Matteo Figura, executive director of food service Italy at Circana research firm. “Gelato confirms its role as a small, affordable luxury that consumers are not willing to give up.

SIGEP WORLD 2026: A GLOBAL SHOWCASE

Now in its 47th edition, SIGEP World trade show is set to confirm its role as the leading international platform for artisan gelato, pastry, chocolate, coffee, bakery, and pizza. Organized by Italian Exhibition Group (IEG), the fair will bring together 1,300 exhibiting brands from over 30 countries, spread across 30 halls, with professional visitors expected from more than 150 nations.

The artisan gelato segment will feature the most comprehensive global offering, covering the entire value chain: state-of-the-art equipment, raw materials, ingredients and semi-finished products, design and furnishings, as well as innovative digital solutions for foodservice business models ranging from independent gelaterias to organized chains, quick service restaurants, fine dining, and luxury hospitality.

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS: FROM GERMANY TO INDIA

SIGEP World will also strengthen international expansion projects for Italian gelato. Among them, “SIGEPland”, dedicated to Germany—the world’s second-largest gelato market after Italy—will offer guided tours tailored for German professionals, supported by a direct Munich–Rimini flight during the event.

Meanwhile, India will be the guest country in 2026, highlighting the country’s growing hospitality and gelato market potential. A large Indian delegation will explore opportunities linked to traditional Italian artisan gelato.

A global education campaign, “What is Gelato?”, launched in partnership with Acomag (National Association of Gelato Equipment Manufacturers) and Unione Italiana Food – Gelato Products Group, will promote Italian gelato culture worldwide through workshops and masterclasses for international foodservice operators and investors.

COMPETITIONS: ITALY DEFENDS ITS CROWN

The event will host the 11th Gelato World Cup, the biennial international competition bringing together elite teams of gelato professionals. Italy, reigning champion from 2024, will defend its title against 11 nations, including France, Belgium, Poland, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador. Competitors will be tested in eight disciplines, combining technical rigor, taste innovation, and artistic flair.
