FDA investigating new Salmonella outbreak

Federal officials are investigating a new outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections.

The Food and Drug Administration is reporting that a source of the pathogen has not yet been identified.

There are 62 confirmed patients, but the FDA is not reporting whether any have required hospitalization. The agency also has not reported the patients’ ages or where they live.

FDA investigators have begun traceback efforts but the agency is not reporting what food is being traced.

There are likely many more sick people in the outbreak because some do not seek medical treatment and others are not specifically tested for Salmonella infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that for every patient identified in a Salmonella outbreak there are 29 who go undetected.

In other outbreak news, in an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections traced to Clover Hill Dairy LLC requeson/soft ricotta cheese the FDA has initiated sampling.

Nine patients from three states have been identified. Eight of the patients have required hospitalization and one has died.

Clover Hill Dairy has initiated a recall, as has Nelson & Isa Lacteos LLC, which sells Clover Hill Dairy cheese in unbranded containers.

The FDA has also posted an update for an outbreak of Cyclospora infections. The patient count has increased from seven to eight. The FDA is not reporting the patients’ ages or where they live. The agency has initiated traceback efforts but is not reporting what food it is tracing.
