FDa closes one outbreak investigation, continues work on several others

The FDA has declared one outbreak has ended and has closed its investigation into another. The agency continues to investigate several other outbreaks.

An outbreak of infections from Salmonella Oranienburg linked to an unidentified product has been declared over with 24 confirmed patients having been identified. The Food and Drug Administration did not report any demographic information about the patients, such as where they live or their ages. In the course of its investigation the agency conducted a traceback of food, but it did not report what food it traced.

For an outbreak of infections from E. coli O145:H28 the FDA has closed its investigation but has not specifically said that the outbreak is over. Eleven patients were confirmed in the outbreak but the FDA did not report where they live or their ages. The agency conducted a traceback of food, but did not report what food it traced. It also conducted onsite inspections and sample testing but did not report what location was inspected or what was tested.

In other outbreak news, on outbreak of infections with the Cyclospora parasite has been split into two investigations. The move was based on epidemiological information from state and federal public health officials. For one of the outbreaks the patient count is 41, but the FDA has not reported where the patients live or their ages. The agency had begun traceback efforts but has not reported what food it is tracing. The agency has also begun sample testing but has not reported what is being tested.

For the other outbreak from the Cyclospora parasite, the patient count is 30. The FDA has not reported where the patients live or their ages. The FDA has begun traceback efforts but has not reported what food is being traced.

Three other outbreaks under investigation
The FDA is continuing to investigate outbreaks linked to frozen sprouted beans, pistachio cream and chicken alfredo meals.

An outbreak on Salmonella Anatum infections linked to Deep brand frozen sprouted moth and mung beans has sickened 11 people across 10 states. Four patients have required hospitalization. The outbreak is ongoing and was first posted by the FDA on July 9.

Deep-brand Sprouted Moong (Mung) in 1-pound (454 g) packages with one of the following lot codes printed on the back side of the bag:  IN 24330, IN 25072, IN 25108, IN 24353, IN 25171, IN 24297, IN 25058, IN 25078, IN 24291, IN 25107, IN 24354, IN 24292 

An outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg linked to pistachio cream has sickened four people in two states. One person has required hospitalization. The outbreak is ongoing and was first posted by the FDA on June 13. The pistachio cream was manufactured by Emek Dogal Saglik Urunleri Iklim Gida Insaat San Tic Ltd Sti in Turkey. The product, Emek Spread Pistachio Cacao Cream with Kadayif, was sold in 9.7-ounce glass jars with BATCH NO: 250401, UPC number 8 69652 10130 1, and a best before date of April 1, 2027. 

An outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to chicken alfredo meals is ongoing and has sickened 17 people across 13 states. Sixteen of the patients have required hospitalization and three have died. The outbreak was first posted by the FDA on April 4.

FreshRealm has recalled chicken fettuccine alfredo meals produced prior to June 17, 2025, that are available under the following brand names:

Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 12.3 oz – best-by date of June 26, 2025, or prior

Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine 32.8 oz – best-by date of June 27, 2025, or prior

Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5 oz – best-by date of June 19, 2025, or prior

Establishment number “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” or “EST. P-47718” appears on the label in the USDA mark of inspection.

The meals are sold in the refrigerated section at Walmart and Kroger stores under the Marketside and Home Chef brand names.
