Italian retailer Crai has become the first company to receive the “Digital Passport for Made in Italy” — a government-backed initiative designed to enhance product traceability, authenticity, and sustainability — during a ceremony held at the Italian Senate.
The award was presented at the “ID Made in Italy: Identity, Innovation and Protection” event, which brought together government officials, military leaders, and business representatives to discuss safeguarding the Made in Italy brand as a strategic cultural and economic asset.
The digital passport aims to certify the origin and integrity of Italian products, serving as a cornerstone in the country’s efforts to protect and promote its manufacturing and artisanal excellence.
Giangiacomo Ibba, president of Crai, said the recognition underscored the company’s longstanding commitment to legality and to the enhancement of Italy’s agri-food supply chain. “Crai is the only company in the Italian retail sector to receive this distinction — a testament to our deep connection to local communities and to the legality pact signed with the Ministry of the Interior,” he said. Ibba also reaffirmed Crai’s pledge to provide consumers with full transparency on the origin and quality of its products.
Speakers at the event emphasized that defending the Made in Italy label is not merely an economic imperative, but a strategic and cultural one — requiring a new generation of digital, legal, and institutional tools to protect a national model of production that remains a global symbol of Italian identity.
