Man arrested for suspected drink contamination

Police in Hong Kong have arrested a man suspected of contaminating drinks at various supermarkets.

In late July, the authorities received a report that 11 bottles of beverages at various supermarkets in Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, and Wan Chai were suspected of containing an unidentified liquid, beginning in September 2024.

Local media reported the alleged contaminant was urine and that six Coca-Cola Plus bottles and a 7UP bottle were affected.

Police said a 9-year-old boy experienced discomfort in July after consuming a drink believed to be contaminated, which had been purchased from a supermarket in Mong Kok. He sought medical treatment and was discharged the same day.

Preliminary testing of the beverages seized by police confirmed that no poisonous substances were present.

Following an investigation by the Kowloon West Regional Crime Unit, a 63-year-old man was arrested in Sham Shui Po earlier this month on suspicion of “administering poison, etc. with intent to injure”. Clothing worn by the suspect, as well as a beverage suspected to contain an unknown liquid, were seized from his residence.

A holding charge has been laid against the defendant. The case was mentioned before the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Aug. 12.

Local media reported the accused was denied bail and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance in October.

Police advised the public to carefully inspect food and beverage items before purchase. If there are any signs of packaging tampering or contamination, or if an unusual odor is detected upon opening, consumers are urged to notify the relevant store or manufacturer or contact the appropriate government department for assistance. Anyone with information relevant to the case is asked to contact the investigating officers.
