Licorice Plum recalled because of undeclared sulfites and unapproved color

East CK Trading, Inc. of Long Island City, NY, is recalling its 8-ounce packages of President Brand “Licorice Plum” food treats because of undeclared sulfites and the presence of an unapproved color, Amaranth (E123). These pose a serious or life-threatening risk to individuals with sulfite sensitivities.

The recall was prompted by routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which revealed 29.1 milligrams of sulfites per serving in the product, an amount that can trigger severe reactions in some asthmatics, including anaphylactic shock. The unapproved color Amaranth (E123) was also detected.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported as of the posting of this recall.

Consumers with sulfite sensitivities are urged not to consume the product and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
