Large Trichinella outbreak raises meat sourcing concerns

Details of a large Trichinella outbreak in Lebanon linked to contaminated meat have been shared in new research.

In December 2023, a Trichinella case was reported in Jahliyeh, Mount Lebanon, to the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (ESU) of the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon.

Scientists surveyed householders to identify cases and assess meat consumption practices, inspected local butcheries, and tested meat samples. They identified 290 patients.
