A petting zoo and farm in Belgium has been allowed to reopen after being connected to an E. coli outbreak.
Between late June and mid-July, eight children in the Brasschaat region were hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) resulting from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O26 infection. HUS is a severe complication associated with E. coli infections that causes kidney failure and can also cause brain damage and death. None of the children remain in a life-threatening condition.
