Estimates reveal ‘considerable suffering’ caused by parasites

Infections from foodborne parasites are decreasing overall but there are some regional increases, according to scientists.

Incidences, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) burdens were estimated for 14 diseases from 2000 to 2021. Foodborne DALYs associated with Paragonimus reduced over the period but those from Clonorchis rose markedly.

Efforts show that 277 million illnesses were caused by potentially invasive parasites, with 171 million attributable to foodborne transmission.
