License for Canadian ice cream company suspended because of food safety violations

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended the license of a Quebec frozen dessert company because of violations of food safety laws.

The agency’s move against Abe’s Frozen Desserts Inc. will remain in effect until the company can demonstrate that it has come into compliance with the Safe Food for Canadians Act and the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations.

An inspection of the company’s operations found several problems, including failures involving pasteurization controls, preventive control plans, hazard analysis, sanitation and sampling for Listeria monocytogenes, equipment maintenance and record-keeping.

Compliance with food safety regulations is essential to protect the public and prevent recalls, the CFIA says. However, no recall is associated with the suspension.

If corrective action is not taken within 90 days, the license may be cancelled.

Abe’s Frozen Desserts Inc. produces kosher and dairy-free ice cream and ice pops sold in supermarkets.
