In 2025, Italian pasta reaffirmed its role as a global leader, consolidating its presence across international markets and strengthening the positioning of Made in Italy food worldwide. According to an analysis by the Italian food industries’ association Unione Italiana Food based on Istat data, exports reached 2,456,940 tonnes, marking a +2.1% increase compared to 2024, with a total value of €3.969 billion.
This performance comes amid a complex geopolitical and economic landscape, highlighting the structural resilience of the sector. Over the course of the year, more than 60% of national production—equal to 4.2 million tonnes out of a global total of 17 million—was destined for international markets, reaching over 200 countries.
NON-EU MARKETS SHOW MIXED BUT STRATEGIC GROWTH
European countries remained the primary outlet for Italian pasta in 2025, absorbing approximately 1.3 million tonnes, or 51.9% of total exports, up 4% year-on-year. Meanwhile, 49.1% of exports reached non-EU markets, with a geographical distribution led by the Americas (17.6%), followed by Asia (10.6%), Oceania (2%), and Africa (1.1%).
Global dynamics varied significantly: Oceania recorded a strong +12.9% increase, while the Americas grew by +4.5%. In contrast, Asia (-6.7%) and Africa (-7.6%) experienced contractions, reflecting an uneven and evolving international environment.
GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES LEAD DEMAND
Among the most receptive markets in 2025, Germany maintained its top position with 466,422 tonnes (+3.7%), followed by the United States with 315,018 tonnes (+4.3%), France with 292,341 tonnes (+4.7%), and the United Kingdom with 279,342 tonnes, showing a slight decline (-1.4%).
Alongside these established markets, particularly dynamic growth was recorded in Australia (+17.4%), Canada (+9.9%), and Poland (+5.2%). Within the European Union, exports also increased in Spain (+4%) and the Netherlands (+6.4%), confirming continued strong demand across the continent.
THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF ITALIAN PASTA
“Being a leading player in foreign markets, with over 60% of production exported, means reaffirming the leadership of Italian pasta as an ambassador of Made in Italy worldwide,” said Margherita Mastromauro, President of the Italian Pasta Makers of Unione Italiana Food. “In the face of ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, Italian pasta producers have responded by demonstrating commitment, passion, and the ability to strengthen commercial relationships with all international partners,” she added.
